3 Tips for RVing with Cats

Cat scratching post

Since space is now a major commodity for us, we didn’t want to bring the cats’ scratching post. There just wasn’t enough room to put it anywhere. We knew the cats would start to tear up the carpet and mattresses if they didn’t have something to scratch on, so we had to do something. I came up with a solution that has worked out perfectly and doesn’t take up any space. I found some old carpet and just wrapped it around one of the table legs. I just used duct tape on the top and bottom to secure it. I wrapped the carpet around several times, so if the cats ever destroy one layer, I can just unwrap it a little bit, cut off the destroyed portion, and they will have fresh carpet to scratch on.

First, tape the carpet to the table leg

Litter Box

Ok, this is a good one. A lot of RVers who have cats keep the litter box in the shower. But then it stinks up the whole house! We instead used the outdoor cubby where the outdoor refrigerator was installed. We sold the mini-fridge on Craigslist, then I cut a hole in the wall and installed a Cat Mate cat door. This cat door is under the bunk beds in the kids room and leads to the cubby in the outdoor kitchen where the mini-fridge used to be. It keeps the litterbox smell out of the house and to scoop it, we just go outside and open the outdoor kitchen flap. I also installed a little Black & Decker handheld vacuum on a charger there to make litter cleanup easy.

Spill Proof Pet Bowl

It’s kind of small in our fifth wheel. So the cat water and food dishes kept getting knocked over or kicked just enough to spill water everywhere. Not to mention getting knocked around when we were traveling. We found a spill proof water/food dish called a Neater Feeder. This thing is awesome! We don’t ever worry about it spilling anymore, even if we are traveling. It even has rubber feet on the bottom to keep it from sliding around. If water spills over the edge of the metal bowl, it just goes into the drain pan underneath. Definitely a must if you have cats or dogs in a RV.
